The Sensei

Tonight the Suns beat the Pistons, largely without the help of Shaquille O'Neal, who was ejected in the 2nd quarter after committing a Flagrant 2 foul. Shaq took umbrage with the call, and based on his years of scientific training, appears to have a viable argument in his own defense. He said:

"The laws of physics say that a body in motion stays in motion. So if you have two objects meet in the air, the smaller object is going to fall much harder. I've never been the type of player to take anybody out, so I obviously went to the ball. The little guy ran into a brick wall."

Internal inconsistencies aside, it's a good explanation. Why is everyone always picking on the Sensei?

One quick Shaq story (since that is the number of total Shaq stories I have): in February 2007 I was staying at the Wynn resort in Las Vegas during the NBA's All-Star Weekend. A large number of NBA players were also staying there that weekend (and, on a side note, a huge gang brawl broke out on the casino floor during the early morning hours on that Sunday. I heard the gunshots as I stood outside in a taxi line waiting for a ride to the airport. Yikes.)

Anyway, as I was walking through the VIP lobby area going back to my room on Saturday afternoon, who should appear from the elevators but Mr. Shaquille O'Neal. He was nattily attired in an enormous purple suit with a matching fedora-style hat. It was just me and Shaq - nobody else around. So I said, "Hey, Shaq" very nonchalantly and he replied, "Whazz up?" in a very deep voice.

That's it. My one encounter with Shaq. Judging from the details of Shaq's on-court fracas tonight, I'd say my encounter with the Big Fella went much better than Rodney Stuckey's.

The only thing that could make that story better is that you saw him at the WingShaq.

I've never met Shaq, but I did run into Dan Majerle at Sky Harbor once. Literally. I turned the corner right into him. I nearly fell, but he seemed unmoved by the experience.

Literally running into celebrities is much cooler than just figuratively running into them. The best literal running-into story I've witnessed was the time that BYU beat UNLV in football at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. My dad and I were on the sidelines with a field pass, and as time expired everyone stormed the field. My dad ran smack into UNLV Head Coach John Robinson at full speed and knocked him sideways. Hey, he may be a hall of fame coach, but nobody stands in the way of my dad's exuberance.
