Sunday Savings

So, for reasons pertaining to my faith I choose not to engage in commercial activities on Sundays. Some people of my faith are much more hardcore than me. These people choose not to watch television or surf the internet on Sundays, for example. Others are less stringent in their observance than I am, participating in some recreational activities with family such as boating or going to the movies. Despite this range of practice habits, I rarely give it much thought and I'm quite comfortable with my level of observance.

And then every now and then something comes along to challenge my stick-to-it-ness.

The Flight of the Conchords are playing at Abravanel Hall on SUNDAY, May 17th. What? Is this the dumbest concert promoter of all time? Who schedules a band to play Salt Lake City on a Sunday?

Once, when I was a teenager, our next door neighbor offered my dad some Redskins vs. Cardinals football tickets that he couldn't use that weekend. I overheard my dad thank him, but tell him that we don't attend sporting events on Sundays.

When I was in college, one of my all-time favorite bands (Belly) was playing at a club in Tempe on a Sunday night. I stayed home. I never got a chance to see them live before they broke up.

Two weeks ago, in the culmination of a lifetime of waiting, my Arizona Cardinals played in the Super Bowl against incalculable odds. I didn't go to Tampa for the game (and I saved about $10k in ticket costs in the process).

I have to remind myself about these things.

To torture myself, I checked on ticket availability for the Flight of the Conchords show in SLC. Whoa! $250 and up per ticket for a show at Abravenel Hall? Hey, observing the Sabbath never felt so great! It's a Sunday Savings!

They are playing in Phoenix two days later on Tuesday, May 19 . . . anybody want to make a trip out of it? Please enjoy this excellent vignette to whet your appetite:

Yes, they are also playing on Sunday out here. It looks like their ticket prices are all very high in every city. Did they accidentally post prices in NZ dollars?

If you come down, I'm definitely wanting to get to the Phoenix show. Tickets are only $35.50, so way more reasonable

Oh, and to stick to the topic of Sundays...

In high school, I won tickets to see the Dead Milkmen, but wasn't allowed to go because it was Sunday.

I was into Nine Inch Nails for a while, and they played a sort of unannouced warmup show in Tucson before their second tour. It was a really small venue, and probably would have been a legendary show. I had the chance to go, and even went down to buy tickets but ultimately decided against it because it was on Sunday.

In 1994 I bought tickets to see Pink Floyd in Phoenix. It was on Sunday, but I had every intention of going anyway. As the concert got closer, I started feeling worse about it, and eventually sold the tickets at the last minute.

I don't know how not going to any of those things may have blessed me, but I just keep telling myself that it has. That's the only comfort that I have when I remember that it's impossible to see Dead Milkmen or Pink Floyd live now.

Didn't we see The Pixies and Jane's Addiction on Sunday? I also recall selling beer at the Superbowl on the Sabbath with you. Sorry to rain on your spiritual parade.

No, we saw Jane's Addiction on a Monday (11/24/97). They had Motley Crue in the venue the following night (Tuesday) and the crowd tore the place up. Those were the last two shows at the Aladdin Theater for the Performing Arts before it shut down. They demolished the whole resort in April 1998.

Yeah, I did sell beer at Super Bowl 30 in 1996. I made about $400 and got to watch the whole second half of the game because they don't sell beer after halftime. I can't remember why we decided that it was fine to work that game on Sunday, but hey, glass houses.

No spiritual parade here. Just reconciling my moral dilemmas in public.

Sorry Doug, I couldn't help myself. I figured the statute of limitations had expired years ago and it was safe to relive those memories.

Looks like a great concert for you in May, and as an extra bonus, anyone you lure into attending with you has free lodging at our house.
