Eating Jell-O in China

I have always wielded chopsticks poorly. During our recent trip to Shanghai, I made a valiant effort to use chopsticks whenever the circumstances dictated. I fared better than I have in the past, but on frequent occasions I reverted back to using those wonders of Western technology, the spoon and the fork.

When I found this video on YouTube, I was relieved to know that even Chinese babies have struggled using chopsticks since, by my best estimate to date this commercial, the early 1960's.

One of the most frequent praises I draw as a foreign resident of Japan is my skill with wielding chopsticks. I would usually derive self-esteem from even those most meaningless of compliments, but this one alone drives me to anger.

I do wield a rocking chopsticks, though. My signature move is to never leave a single grain of rice in the dish. YEEEEEAAAHH BOYYYYYYY!

Just as the food gets within millimeters of entering my mouth, time after time, those darn chop sticks just can't hold on to it any longer. It takes me about an hour to eat with chopsticks. I'll stick with a fork.

Somehow this commercial seems a little racist. Maybe it's the Chinese accent.

i use you as my barometer for all things cultured. knowing that you have a hard time with the chopsticks makes me feel a little less inadequate.
